Among the mail that crosses my desktop are announcements of several upcoming conferences and seminars:
The Society for Ecological Restoration will be holding a seminar on January 9 called, Urban Landscapes: Opportunities for Ecological Restoration, with talks on natural stormwater management, restoring urban streams, and greening brownfields. Natural Lands Trust is a cosponsor of this event which will be held at Philadelphia University.
The following week on January 16 and 17 is the eighteenth annual New Directions in the American Landscape symposium, co-sponsored by Morris Arboretum: Native Landscape Design for the Real World. It is held at Arboretum Villanova on the campus of the University. Dr. Roger Latham will be speaking about meadows, Glenn Dreyer about shrublands, Dr. Marcia Johnson about working with succession to establish woodlands, among many other speakers.
The Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture will be having their 17th annual Farming for the Future Conference on February 7 to 9: Ready to Grow: Sharing the Sustainable Story at the Penn Stater Conference Center and will include 83 (by my count) workshops on growing crops, pastured poultry and grass-fed beef, marketing, finding land on which to farm, nutrition, public policy, and finding the sustainable lifestyle on the farm. This conference is known for its food—donated by the farmers who attend—and the camaraderie.
And on February 21 Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve will be holding its 8th Land Ethics Symposium: Creative Approaches to Ecological Landscaping. Natural Lands Trust is also a cosponsor of this program and two members of our staff will be speaking: Holly Harper will address "Stewardship Planning for Natural Lands," and Ann Hutchinson will take on "Preserving Land in the Face of Development."
Even though these events are taking place "next year" they are coming up fast. The time to register for them is now. Check out the details on the linked websites.
