I am very fond of the blue false indigo, Baptisia australis, that we have planted in the barnyard of the visitor center. It's a tough native perennial for full sun. I stake it before it flops too much, but it also can be cut back after blooming.
The native fringetree, Chionanthus virginicus, is a beautiful and fragrant small tree that is one many visitors comment on.
And Dutchman's pipe foliage looks great climbing this porch pier. I had never seen this plant in the wild until I was hiking the Appalachian Trail in the Grayson Highlands of Virginia last year. Our plant is starting its third growing season at this site. It hasn't begun to flower and it will eventually need some pruning to restrain it. But I'm not growing it for the interesting but not prominent flowers—I like it for the clean, bold foliage.
