There is a little more activity in the boxes this week. I confirmed that there are 4 young bluebirds. They should be ready to leave their nest sometime next week. Then the parents will hopefully start a new nest and try to raise another brood, while the living is easy.
We also have a chickadee or a titmouse starting a nest. Both species make their nests using moss; and both have white and brown speckeled eggs. I have to see an adult leaving the box to know for sure which species is nesting. They are using the box that held a wren's cock nest last week, so the jenny wren must have decided that she didn’t like the location.
Wrens are, however, moving in to three different boxes. This photo shows a cock nest (just a few twigs) . Wren nests won’t win any architectural awards, but because they are cavity nesters, they don’t have to hold together all that well.
