We were inundated with rain this weekend. I measured 3.71 inches in Mariton's rain gauge. Checking my records, the average amount of rainfall for the entire month of April is 3.75 inches. So, we have attained the average in the first 4 days of the month. 5.82 inches is the most rainfall received during April (from 1997 to now).
I walked some trails this morning to check for any storm damage. The trails I checked looked good. The water bars did their job and slowed down any run-off to prevent erosion.
I also walked out to the River Lookout and the Chimney Rock to see the extent of the flooding. I have included to some photos from 9:00 a.m. this morning with a little description of each.
This photo is taken from the River Lookout looking north along Route 611. (You can click on the photo for an enlargement.) The group of trees on the right side of the photo is on the Towpath. To the right of these trees is the normal river channel. To the left is theTowpath, the Canal and Route 611.
This photo is taken from the same location as the one above. But we are looking down at the base of the cliff. The telephone pole and trees in this photo are located to the left of the rock wall, that runs along Route 611. So the base of the pole and trees would be about 4 feet above the road bed.
This photo is taken at the base of the cliffs. The tree in the center of the picture is on the rock wall, right at the edge of the road. The water level is at least 5 feet above the road surface.
