The warm weather feels good and spring is about to burst. The first of the native trees to flower here is silver maple (Acer saccharinum), slightly edging out and looking similar to red maple (Acer rubrum). We only have a couple silver maples at the preserve but red maple is one of the dominant trees of our floodplains and even is beginning to colonize the uplands.
I have finished the winter mowing of meadows (I cut it really close in timing this year); there are two that we will burn in a couple weeks. There's still some winter storm damage to clean up on the edge of the farm fields and now we're gearing up for spring projects.
We have wrapped up the winter sessions of WebWalkers, WebWanderers, and WebWigglers. The programs began in snow and we spent the first couple weeks getting in some sledding. It brought good closure to the program that the last pile of snow was used up with snowballs on the last day.
